Band Marketing - Engaging the Community

Marketing tips for bands from iSound.com
Sometimes what makes a great band can be as little as being engaged in the community.

Here are some ideas on how you can engage the community.

  • Video Journals - Keep your fans in the loop by doing a weekly video journal of the bands adventures. Everything from band practice, videos from the tour etc.
  • Blogs - Besides having a band blog each member should have a blog that is open to the public.
  • Photo Journals - Like the video journal, photos should be taken and shared with fans. Encourage your fans to subscribe to your photo feed.
Your band and each member of the band should have their own identity that should be open to the public. Updates should be weekly and on a regular basis. Your fans should get used to logging in and checking up with the band each week to see what new content, blogs, photos are available.

Here are some great examples from bands around the web

Valencia - This band does a good job of releasing videos on a regular basis.

Here is a video they made of their favorite moments on tour.

Hellogoodbye - This band does a good job with a photo journal. Pictures are uploaded almost weekly and include everything from the band shopping, touring, and just having fun

Fake Shark Real Zombie - Angel Lust

Reviews
Picture bucket loads of glitter being shot out of a cannon. Now, if that violent but prissy explosion was a sound and not a mental picture, it would come burned on a compact disc and called Fake Shark-Real Zombie!" - Nerve Magazine

"...blending together a post-hardcore sound with a brightly coloured, scattered, attitude-driven sound that has a Blood Brothers feel but pulled off with a less serious approach."

Boo And Boo Too - Obviously
Boo And Boo Too - No Tempo
Boo And Boo Too - I'll be your whore

Reviews
“Boo And Boo Too are a Lawrence, Kansas sextet with fang to spare. Specializing in incredibly muscular, sleeves-rolled-up guitar rock that throws up great walls of fly paper melody, their new full-length No Tempo, is a stunner. ‘I Know Nothing’s Alright’ is that album’s towering opener and its squalls, like those in standout ‘No Tempo,’ are some of the most breathtaking I’ve heard in a while...” – rcrdlbl.com

“[No Tempo] continues on as a work of sweltering hard driving claustrophobia intermingled with shoegaze, NYC noise, and a dark myopia reminiscent of The Cure’s Pornography.” – parasitesandsycophants.com

“But what makes No Tempo such a damn listenable record is that Boo and Boo Too are able to draw from several areas of music’s past and blend all their influences into a sound that’s familiar before it’s fresh. It’s loud without being obnoxious, current without being too trendy, and vintage shoegaze without being patronizing. In its entirety, No Tempo is as straightforward an offering of bottled manicisim as one can get.” – baeblemusic.com

The Postal Service is the new Chinese Democracy

In an interview with Rolling Stone Ben Gibbard pretty much destroys all hope that there will ever be a second Postal Service album.

Any updates with your side-project the Postal Service? Are there plans to follow-up with your 2003 debut Give Up?
No update. It’s the record that never seems to want to come out. It’s also just never been a priority for either Jimmy [Tamborello, Postal Service co-founder] or myself. The anticipation of the second record has been a far bigger deal for everybody except the two of us.
It’s the new Chinese Democracy.
Right. I don’t know about it being the indie-rock Chinese Democracy but now that Chinese Democracy has come out, I guess it just becomes the second Postal Service record that will never come out. There never really was a plan to do a second album. We work from time to time together but we have other things that take up all of our time. (rollingstone)

It is pretty much impossible in my opinion for there ever to be a 2nd Postal Service album. The band has reached mythical proportions. The expectations are so high that I am pretty sure Ben realizes that he will never be able to satisfy those expectations. I'm sure we can look forward to random singles marketed as Postal Service off movie soundtracks or b-sides but there will never be another album.

Possible Blink 182 Reunion In The Near Future?

Mark Hoppus has updated his blog

"in the midst of everything else that has happened lately, tom, travis, and i have all spoken together. first through a number of phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours. they’ve all been great, very positive conversations. we’re just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking. it’s a good thing. obviously the first question for a lot of people will be “does this mean a blink-182 reunion?” the answer is none of us know. we haven’t talked about it at all. right now it’s just good for the three of us to see one another, reconnect, and let the past be the past. the events of the past two months supersede everything that happened before. life is too short."(HiMyNameIsMark Blog)
In my experience, once bands that have been broken up for some time and start talking about things like this, it usually means that a reunion is not far behind. What do you think, Blink 182 reunion before 2010?

New Riverboat Gamblers (Free MP3)

The Riverboat Gamblers have a new mp3, "A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology" off their new album Underneath The Owl available in March.

Download
Riverboat Gamblers - "A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology"

Singled out by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke as one of the “Top 5 Bands at SXSW” in 2006 and later proclaimed #15 of the “25 Greatest Live Bands Right Now” by Spin Magazine, the Riverboat Gamblers have cultivated a fanatical and even somewhat celebrity following with their rowdy, energetic live shows.

Originally formed in 1997, the Gamblers built a local following and busted out of the Denton TX college scene in 2001 on the back of their self-released 7” single “Jenna Is A No Show”. With that the band began to take the show from the dives bars and house parties of UNT on to the rest of the country. Austin punk legend Tim Kerr produced their self-titled debut album that was released on the D.C. based Vile Beat Records. A couple years later, despite rabid major-label interest (in part derived from an explosive set at 2003’s South by Southwest festival), the Gamblers released their second album "Something To Crow About" through San Francisco’s Gearhead Records. In 2006 the band recorded and released their debut for Volcom Entertainment, “To The Confusion Of Our Enemies”, and hit the road with Against Me!, Eagles of Death Metal, Horrorpops, The Rollins Band, X, Joan Jett and co-headlined the inaugural Volcom Tour in the U.S. with label mates, Valient Thorr.

Riverboat Gamblers “Underneath The Owl” was recorded and produced by the “band ruining Famous Hollywood Producer” Mudrock, and will arrive in stores and online March 10, 2009.

Check out the new Boy Eats Drum Machine

Boy Eats Drum Machine is the solo work of native Portlander, Jon Ragel. He is a songwriter, producer, singer, turntablist, and also plays saxophone, guitar, synthesizer, organ, and several percussive nick nacks.

As a one-man musical act, Boy Eats Drum Machine merges the worlds of turntablism and live rock performance as Ragel spins breaks and surgically inserts sounds while juggling vocals, percussion, and saxophone.

His latest album, Booomboxxx, is an experimental pop record loaded with unique turntable textures, saxophone blasts, expertly chopped break beats, and gutsy vocals. Although the record effectively mashes several musical forms, it is Ragel’s most cohesive work to date, bringing to mind artists like DJ Shadow, Queen, Morphine, David Bowie, and The Postal Service.

State Shirt sculpts fiery, intense indie rock anthems for the wondering, wandering and hopeful on latest disc

State Shirt aka Ethan Tufts sculpts fiery, intense indie rock anthems for the wondering, wandering and hopeful. Venturing wildly into the farthest corners of heavy-hearted American landscapes, State Shirt’s music displays vivid, gripping stories of nostalgia, despair and hope.

From Southern California’s droning and faceless San Fernando Valley to the snowy back roads of Western Massachusetts and steeped in a cycle of inescapable, mind-numbing full-time jobs, State Shirt relies on hand-built loops, neglected instruments and riveting vocals to artfully describe captivity in a familiar never-ending cycle: work, drink, sleep, repeat.

But, through it all, a glimmer of hope shines.

From a modest bedroom sanctuary devoted to writing and recording, sparkles of surreal, melancholic melodies bubble up. Voltage runs through a collection of dusty pedals, guitars and electronics to deliver This Is Old, State Shirt’s deeply textured second album, a set of swirling and burning indie-tronic statements proving that monotonous lives can produce exceptional results.
