The Pendletons Make Rolling Stone’s “Hot List”

“Holy shit! Who are these guys? Peter Buck was spotted at a recent show by these Athens, Georgia, kids who sound like Vampire Weekend on a semester abroad with Arctic Monkeys. Check them at myspace.com/pendletons and prepare to be impressed.” – Rolling Stone

Athens, GA wunderkinds The Pendletons have been doing their own thing from the start. Their unconventional approach (which often includes providing free chicken wings at shows, or buying the entire bar a round of beers) has made then the talk of the town in Athens, and now the attention is spreading.

Rolling Stone magazine editors perked up their ears to the Pendletons’ first single “Sad Songs”, adding it to their “Hot List” for the last 40th Anniversary Issue of the magazine.

After a knock-out sets at the indie outlaw CMJ showcase, a Cake Shop show with fellow Athens, GA band Casper and the Cookies, and an all-out dance party at Arlene’s Grocery, The Pendletons are back in Athens working on new material for the spring.

The band recently released its full-length debut Oh, Me! on indie outlaw. Athens audiences got their first introduction to The Pendletons when the band opened numerous shows for ATO Records’ The Whigs. Both acts have since established tremendous fanbases in and out of Athens.

Frontman Adam Saunders spent the summer in an LA studio with The Whigs, cutting all the bass parts as well as guitar and vocals for the band’s upcoming Mission Control (ATO Records). “It was awesome to work with them. I’m most excited about people who haven’t gotten to see them live hearing what a strong rock band they are on this record. It was just amazing to be part of that,” says Saunders. The album is expected this winter.

The Pendletons’ sound can easily be described as “the best of Athens meets the best of elsewhere”. Oh, Me! highlights many historical features of Athens’ music—ultra-catchy melodies, flashy parts, and a downhome nature that harkens back the old days of vinyl-based rock ‘n’ roll. But The Pendletons update the traditional Athens sound in a way that makes Peter Buck dance with a beer high in the air (seriously…. He did it at SXSW!)
