New MP3: Nick T. - Let It Go (Flying Lotus remix)
Reefer is Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns, Human Highway) and Los Angeles-based hip-hop producer/engineer Daddy Kev (Busdriver, Freestyle Fellowship, Awol One). Mutual admirers of each other's work, the two developed a close friendship over the years after being introduced by avant-rapper Giovanni Marks (Subtitle). The idea to create a record together was hatched at SXSW party a few years back where Nick and Kev decided they should take their disparate music backgrounds and create something in an environment much different than their normal lives in Montreal and Los Angeles, respectively. Quite possibly a drunken agreement -- as Nick was ejected that evening from the venue for sneaking in booze -- they still followed through on their brilliant idea and isolated themselves on the Hawaiian island of Maui to create their vision.
Thorburn has been no stranger to drawing inspiration from hip-hop, as evidenced in much of the work of Islands and especially in the post-Unicorns rap project Th' Corn Gangg. Differing from MCs rhyming over the eclectic arrangements of Islands, Reefer is Nick crafting his darkly tinted pop over the foundation of Kev's sweeping, smooth beats crafted from tropical samples with flourishes of steel guitar and ukelele.
Their self-titled mini album (previously entitled The Life Narcotic) contains six sun-dripped songs and three interludes, plus remixes from Dntel and Flying Lotus. The album was composed on the Maui coastline in Makena, and was finished soon after in Los Angeles at Daddy Kev's studio, the Echo Chamber. Reefer is very much influenced by the beautiful tropical surroundings, the sounds of the ocean, and being far away from their regular daily routines. Not predictably sunny in tone, the minor-key arrangements and Thorburn's playful wordplay conjures up images of something more sinister than cheeseburgers in paradise. Kev's subtle, controlled production fits each songs mood nicely and draws from Hawaiian pop influences. Initially considered to be a one-off project, Reefer hopes to make another album when they meet again in a new exotic tropical location.

Rather then explore the outer ring he opted to polish the double-helix, scrub the electrons and map the infinite space between particles, the space between the wall and the fist, the small hairs and ocular freeways that inform the mind, that text-book-answers are an easy option, but not the only path. Rig 1, a Midwestern endeavor 10 years in the making, started in the jammed-in-the deck 36 Chambers cassette, melting behind the dashboard controls in the baking sun, windows up tight, air choking and abandoned; Rig 1 started in the janitor’s closet, in the bag of E’s in the top drawer, in the notion that inner-space has no mirrors, only manifestations of will.
Andy LeMaster and Rig 1 bunkered up and started exploring the sounds that were noticeably absent from hip-hop, sonic mud pots, forgetting to turn off the oven, bloody eggs, guitars, Aceeed 303 late 80’s gurgle and layers of sound that toss Spaceman 3, Mercury Rev, Too Short and Timothy Leary into one rolled up and lit up endeavor, doing something the way you hear it in your heart and mind.

LA Synth Punkers ANAVAN Prep New Album 'Cover Story'

Flagbearers for no particular scene or agenda, ANAVAN are as unique a Los Angeles institution as Ron Jeremy, The Smell, and taco trucks. Recently, they've shared the stage with NO MEANS NO, CRYSTAL CASTLES and MONOTONIX, toured with HEALTH and CLIP'D BEAKS. Birthed from the pregnant stew of downtown's now legendary all-ages venue, The Smell, ANAVAN cracked their shell alongside groups like NO AGE, ABE VIGODA, FOOT VILLAGE, and MIKA MIKO. Their sound, however, owes as little to their local peers as it does the aforementioned duos. The most obvious break from convention was (and still is) the conspicuous lack of guitar - an absence one forgets shortly after the first glorious note is struck. In a city full of 5-, 7-, hell, even 10-piece ensembles, the concept of "less is more" starts becoming something of an emergency. When less equals as much more as ANAVAN delivers, the wheat has already begun showing the chaff where to stick it. "Power trio" hardly does them justice.
Their sophomore album "Cover Story" finds the band honing their pop sensibilities while maintaining the driving energy and DIY work ethic of their punkier, self-titled 2006 debut on Gold Standard Labs and singles for Deathbomb Arc (Foot Village, Captain Ahab,Thurston Moore).
